Sleep
Tired, and still awake.
That is not a lack of discipline. A body that is braced does not let go, however tired it is.
Why
Sleep happens when your body decides it is safe
You cannot make yourself sleep. Sleep is something that happens when your nervous system decides it is safe enough to stop keeping watch.
If your body spent the day on guard, it carries that guard into bed: the mind that keeps replaying, the jaw that will not unclench, the waking at three in the morning. Trying harder to sleep only adds effort to a body that needs the opposite.
The way in is a signal the body understands. Slow breath. A low, steady sound. The same ritual, night after night, until your body knows what comes next.
What helps
Three things your body understands
- A longer exhale than inhale. In for four, out for six. It is the simplest way to tell your body the day is over.
- A low, steady tone. I use 174 Hz to begin, because it gives the body something to settle onto.
- Repetition. The same practice at the same time teaches your body the way down, and it gets faster with practice.
This is not a treatment for insomnia. If poor sleep has gone on for a long time, see your doctor; this practice can sit alongside that.
