The ten frequencies / 174 Hz

174 Hz

The frequency of safety

Before you can heal anything, you have to feel safe enough to try.

The lowest of the nine Solfeggio tones, added to the original six after they were published.

What it is for

Everything in this practice depends on one condition that most of us were never taught to create: safety. Not safety as a circumstance, but as a state of the body. Your nervous system is checking for safety and threat all the time, below thought. When it decides you are safe, the breath deepens, the muscles soften, and the parts of you that think clearly and rest well come back online. When it decides you are not, it braces.

Modern life keeps many of us in a low hum of bracing, so constant that it starts to feel like personality. 174 Hz is where I begin every session. It is low enough to be felt as much as heard, and its job is simple: give the body something steady to settle onto before anything else is asked of it.

What it can feel like

Most people notice weight first. Not heavy in a bad way, but as if something that was hovering finally touches the floor. The breath deepens on its own. Some feel warmth move into the hands and feet. None of it is dramatic. It is quiet, and it is real.

Everyone’s body answers in its own way. Notice what yours does rather than looking for what someone else described.

What the research says

No study has tested 174 Hz on its own. Its meaning, safety and the foundation, comes from the Solfeggio tradition, not from a laboratory.

What is well studied is the setting I use it in. Slow breathing reliably moves the body toward rest, and calm, steady sound helps. I use the tone as an anchor for that work, never as a treatment.

What the research shows about sound, breath and frequency

How I use it

  • Five to ten minutes at the start of any session, before any other frequency.
  • Twenty to thirty minutes on its own, lying down with your eyes closed, as a way into sleep.
  • After stress, as the quickest way back into your body.

Headphones carry the tone best. Never while driving.

In the course

This tone also plays on its own in Frequency Studio.

A question to take with you

Where in your body do you feel the most unsafe, and when did that first start to feel familiar?

From Chapter 11 of Frequency Shift, which goes deeper into this frequency.
