Calm
Calm is not a personality. It is something your body learns.
People tell me how calm I am under pressure. It took years of practice, and the practice can be learned.
Why
Your nervous system has three states
Safe and connected, when the breath moves easily and you can think clearly. Mobilized, when the heart speeds up and the mind scans for the next problem. Shut down, when everything goes flat and far away.
Most of us live in a low, constant version of mobilized: not panic, just a hum, always slightly braced. It feels so normal that we mistake it for who we are.
Calm is not forcing that hum quiet. It is teaching your body the way back to safe, often enough that it can find the way on its own.
What helps
The way back
- Name the state first. Before you try to change anything, notice where you are.
- Slow the exhale. A long out-breath is the fastest signal of safety you can send.
- Come back every day. A short daily practice does more than a long one now and then.
